Frequently Asked Questions
What Does a Rheumatologist Do?
Rheumatologists are specialists who
diagnose and treat arthritis, rheumatic, connective tissue, and
autoimmune diseases; musculoskeletal pain disorders; and
osteoporosis.
When Should You See a Rheumatologist?
If musculoskeletal pain in the joints,
muscles or bones is severe or persists for a prolonged period of
time, at that point it is prudent to consult a rheumatologist. Many
types of rheumatic diseases are not easily identified in the early
stages. Rheumatologists are specially trained to do the detective
work necessary to discover the cause of your symptoms. It's
important to determine a correct diagnosis early so that
appropriate treatment can begin early. Most musculoskeletal
disorders respond best to treatment in the early stages of the
disease.
What Can Be Done?
There are many new, innovative, and
effective treatments that are now available for rheumatoid
arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and other rheumatic and
autoimmune disorders. Much progress has been made in the last few
years. More is on the way.
